Just got licensed - feeling nervous about my first net check-in

Hey everyone! I just got my Technician license last week (WB2XYZ) and I've been listening to the local Monday evening net on the 146.94 repeater. I know I should listen before transmitting to make sure the frequency is clear, but I'm still nervous about jumping in for my first check-in.

The net control station seems very professional, but I'm worried I'll mess up the procedure or forget my call sign when it's my turn. Any advice for a new ham on net etiquette? Should I mention it's my first time?

Thanks for any guidance - this community has been so welcoming!

Welcome to the hobby, WB2XYZ! New hams often need guidance and encouragement - if you hear a beginner struggling, offer polite and constructive advice. Don't worry, we've all been there. Just give your call sign clearly when NCS asks for check-ins, and feel free to mention "new ham" - most nets love welcoming fresh voices!

I was terrified for my first net too! The NC will acknowledge those received and ask for any additions or corrections to call signs. If you stumble over your call, they'll help you out. Just speak slowly and clearly - you've got this!

Great advice here! As a new ham you should spend some time listening, so you can gain an understanding of how people speak and phrases they use in your area. Once you check in a few times, it becomes second nature. The Monday night crew is particularly friendly to new operators.
