so ive been licensed about 4 months now, got my general ticket in march and i've been lurking on a few local 2m nets and one HF net on 40m that my elmer recommended. i finally worked up the courage to check in last tuesday and i think i maybe screwed up the procedure a little? i said my callsign before the net control asked for check-ins, not sure if that was a big deal or if people noticed. nobody said anything but i felt kinda embarrassed.

also im confused about when you're supposed to give your full callsign vs just the suffix. like sometimes i hear guys just say their last two or three letters and net control seems fine with it, but other times i hear people give the whole thing every single time. is there a rule about that or is it just whatever the net wants?

also does anyone have tips for just generally not sounding like a complete newb on the air, not that theres anything wrong with being new, i just want to not accidentally step on anyone or do something rude without realizing it.

dont stress too much about the timing thing, honestly most net controls have heard it all and they're not going to hold it against a new op. the main thing is you showed up and checked in, that counts for a lot more than you think.

as for the callsign question, technically by FCC rules you're supposed to use your full callsign for identification purposes, but in practice a lot of nets are pretty relaxed and they'll accept just the suffix especially if you're already in the system and net control knows who you are. some nets are more formal than others, like traffic nets tend to be tighter about procedure than a casual rag chew net. best thing to do is just listen for a few sessions and see what style that particular net uses and follow their lead. if in doubt, full callsign is always correct.

and honestly the best advice i can give is just listen a lot before you transmit. you'll pick up so much just from hearing how other people handle themselves, especially the experienced ops. nobody who's been in this hobby more than a few years is going to look down on a new ham for being a little rough around the edges, we all sounded exactly like that at some point.

yeah im pretty new too, only been licensed since january, and i had the exact same worries when i started checking into nets. what helped me was finding a net that specifically said it was newbie friendly and the net control on that one was super patient about explaining the format at the start of the session. might be worth hunting around for something like that in your area if you havent already.

one thing i did wrong early on was not listening to the whole preamble at the start because i was nervous and kind of zoning out, and then i missed when they explained how they wanted people to check in that night. so now i make sure im tuned in like 5 minutes early and actually paying attention before the net starts.
