IC-7300 no output power after lightning storm — not sure where to start

 Loading...

so this has been sitting on my bench for about three weeks now and im finally getting around to posting about it. neighbor down the street had a lightning strike pretty close to his shack during that storm we had back in late september, took out his IC-7300 among other things. he asked if i could take a look before he sends it off to icom for a repair quote because apparently they want like $200 just to evaluate it.

the radio powers on fine, display looks normal, all the menus work, SWR meter responds, ALC moves around like it should. but zero RF out. im talking literally nothing on my dummy load with a power meter in line. TX light comes on when i key up, everything looks normal except no power coming out the antenna port.

ive got a decent scope and a DMM, comfortable doing component level repair if i can figure out what to chase. my first thought was the finals but the driver stage before it could also be cooked. anyone dealt with one of these after a nearby strike? wondering if there's a known weak point in the PA section or if i should be checking something obvious first that im missing.

had almost the exact same symptom on a 7300 that came through here, though in that case it was a direct hit on the coax not a nearby strike. the finals on these are the RD70HVF1 MOSFETs and they're a pretty common failure point, but before you go digging into those i'd check the PA bias circuit first because sometimes the bias trimmer or the transistor that controls it gets cooked and the finals themselves are actually fine. if the bias is way off you'll get no output even with good finals.

also worth checking the low pass filter board for any visually burned components, ive seen the relays on that board arc internally and cause weird symptoms too. icom's service manual for the 7300 is floating around online and it has the voltage test points laid out pretty well. pull the top cover and look for anything obviously scorched before you start probing.

yeah the bias check is the right call first, saves you the hassle of pulling finals that might be ok. one thing i'd add is check continuity through those LPF relays because a stuck or welded relay contact can block output entirely and it looks exactly like what your describing. pretty easy to check with the board out of circuit.

btw if you do end up needing the RD70HVF1s, RF Parts usually has them in stock, last time i checked they were around 20 bucks each and the 7300 has two of them. not a fun job to replace but doable if you're comfortable with SMD work and have a decent hot air station.
