First time applying for WAS - need some guidance on LoTW vs QSL cards

Hi folks! I'm getting close to having worked all 50 states and thinking about applying for my first WAS award. I've got about 47 states confirmed in LoTW, but I'm a bit confused about the whole process.

Do I need to wait until I have all 50 confirmed in LoTW before applying, or can I submit a mixed application with some LoTW confirmations and some paper QSL cards? Also, what's the deal with the Triple Play WAS - is that worth going for as a newer ham?

Any guidance from those who've been down this path would be greatly appreciated!

You can apply for WAS through LoTW once you have all 50 states confirmed there - it's actually the easiest way since the ARRL staff makes the process painless when you have all your credits. Triple Play WAS requires 150 confirmations (50 states on phone, CW, and digital) and is a one-time award with many possible variations.

I'd recommend sticking with LoTW confirmations if possible - so much easier than mailing cards around! No tedious requesting or answering QSL cards, nothing to distract from the on-the-air thrill of the hunt. For those last few states, try working contests like the ARRL RTTY Roundup or North American QSO Party.

Welcome to the award hunting addiction! Remember that QSL confirmations can cost several dollars per card when going international, so LoTW saves you money too. Start with basic WAS, then consider the endorsements once you get hooked on chasing awards.
