First time building a go-kit - need advice on power and antennas

Hey everyone! Just got my Technician license last month and I'm putting together my first emergency go-kit after reading about the importance of being prepared for emergency communications. I've got a Baofeng UV-5R but I'm really confused about power options and portable antennas.

I know I need multiple charged battery packs, maybe a solar charger, and a power bank, but there are so many choices! Also, everyone talks about portable antennas - do I really need something fancy or will the stock antenna work for local repeaters? Would love some guidance from folks who've actually used their kits in the field.

Thanks for any help - this community has been amazing for a new ham!

Welcome to the hobby! For power, start simple - get a couple extra battery packs for your UV-5R and consider a small solar panel later. The stock antenna will work fine for local repeaters, but a Diamond SRH771 makes a noticeable difference and only costs about $20. Most important thing is to test everything together before you need it!

Also suggest a small external antenna like a J-pole - super easy to deploy and much better than the rubber duck.

Don't overthink it for your first kit! You can set up an antenna, establish power, and check into emergency nets within minutes with basic gear. Focus on reliability over fancy stuff. I keep two UV-5Rs, spare batteries, and a simple roll-up J-pole in a small backpack. Works great for ARES drills.
