How often should you practice with your go-kit? Lessons learned from last weekend

Had an eye-opening experience this weekend during our local ARES exercise. We're supposed to conduct regular drills to practice setting up our go-kits, but I realized I hadn't touched mine in about 6 months. Big mistake!

Half my coax connectors had corrosion, one of my battery packs was completely dead, and I couldn't find my printed frequency list - had to fumble around trying to remember which repeater was which. Regular training and participation in emergency drills are essential for maintaining readiness and honing skills. The EC wasn't too impressed with my 15-minute setup time either.

So my question: how often do you all practice with your kits? Monthly? Quarterly? And what's your checklist for maintenance?

Great question! I participate in local and national emergency drills regularly and follow updates from ARRL. I do a full kit deployment monthly and equipment checks every two weeks - charge batteries, test radios, inspect cables. Takes 30 minutes but saves hours when it counts.

I learned this lesson the hard way too during Field Day a few years back! Now I practice quarterly and do monthly checks. I conduct periodic drills that simulate various emergency scenarios - this practice helps familiarize operators with procedures and equipment. Also keep a simple checklist taped inside my go-box lid.

Don't feel bad - we've all been there! Our local club does regular nets, tabletop exercises, and live drills every month. I suggest starting with monthly practice until it becomes second nature, then maybe every other month. The key is making it routine so your gear doesn't surprise you when you need it most.
