finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend, few questions

 Loading...

so i finally got off my butt and did a proper WWFF activation at a state wildlife management area about 45 minutes from my house. been meaning to do it for like two years and just kept putting it off. anyway i threw the KX2 in a backpack with my linked dipole and hiked about a mile in to a nice flat spot near a creek and set up against a big oak tree, had the antenna strung between two branches which worked surprisingly well.

managed 47 QSOs over about two hours, mostly 40m with a few on 20m toward the end. logged it all with HAMRS which i know some people have issues with but it worked fine for me. uploaded to ADIF and submitted to the WWFF database through their portal and i think it went through okay, got a confirmation email eventually.

couple things im not sure about though — do i need to be in a specific part of the reference area or is anywhere within the boundary okay? like i didnt go to the actual designated trail or anything, just found a good spot inside the area boundaries. and also does the 44 QSO minimum apply per band or total? i read the rules like three times and got confused. the website could honestly be clearer about this. anyone done a bunch of these that can help?

congrats on the first one, that creek spot sounds like a great setup honestly. to answer your questions — yeah anywhere within the reference boundary counts, you dont have to stick to a trail or any particular spot as long as you're actually inside the area. some folks hike way out, some just pull off at the parking area, doesnt matter for the log.

the 44 QSOs is total, not per band. so your 47 is good, you're fine. a lot of people get tripped up on that. the rules page on the WWFF website is a bit of a maze but once you've done a couple activations it starts to make more sense. just make sure your log has the reference number in there correctly and the date lines up, thats usually where people run into trouble with the upload. sounds like you did everything right though. 40m is the workhorse for these, good call starting there.

oh man i did my first one like three months ago and had the same questions, the 44 QSO thing threw me off too. i ended up on the WWFF facebook group and people there are super helpful if you ever get stuck. also i didnt realize til after my first one that you should try to spot yourself on the WWFF spotter network before you start, makes a huge difference for how fast the QSOs come in. i only got like 28 my first time because nobody knew i was out there and i was just calling CQ into the void for a while lol. second time i spotted myself and hit 44 in like 35 minutes, totally different experience.
