bands have been weird lately — missing DX openings or just bad luck?

so ive been noticing the last couple weeks that 17m and 20m have been really inconsistent for me. some mornings i wake up early, fire up the rig, and theres just... nothing. like complete deadband. then ill check the solar flux and its sitting around 140-150 which should be decent right? but then other days when the flux is like 120 i hear EU stations booming in at S9. i dont get it.

im not new to this hobby but propagation still feels like black magic to me sometimes. been trying to use pskreporter and DXmaps to figure out when the openings are happening but i feel like im always just missing the window by like an hour. anybody else having this kind of frustration or is there something im not looking at that would help me time things better?

yeah the solar flux number alone doesnt tell you the whole story, thats the thing a lot of people dont realize at first. you also wanna keep an eye on the K-index and the A-index. if the K-index spikes up to like 4 or 5 youre gonna have a rough time on the higher bands even if the flux looks good. geomagnetic disturbances can absolutely kill what should be a great day for DX. i got burned by this so many times before i started checking both.

also 20m is kind of tricky because the grey line opening can be really short — like 20-30 minutes sometimes — and if youre not tuned in right at that moment you miss the EU pile up entirely. i started setting an alarm based on the grey line calculator for my QTH and that helped a lot honestly. DXmaps is great but by the time something shows up on there the opening is sometimes already half over.

same boat here. last Tuesday I had a killer opening to JA on 17m, worked like 6 stations in 20 minutes, then poof gone. checked back an hour later and totally dead. propagation is just humbling sometimes lol. I use the Space Weather website almost every morning now before i even sit down at the radio, just makes it easier to set expectations for the day.
