first time checking into a net — what am I supposed to actually say

 Loading...

ok so ive been licensed for about three months now and I keep reading about nets but I honestly have no idea what the actual procedure is when you check in. like I know you wait for the net control to ask for check-ins and then you just say your callsign but is there more to it than that? do you have to give your name every time? your location? I was listening to the 2m local net last tuesday and some people said their name and city and some people just said their callsign and sat down so I'm confused about what the expectation is.

also theres a special event station coming up next month for a civil war battlefield near me and I saw something about a net associated with it but I dont really understand what that means either. is it like a normal net or something different? sorry if these are dumb questions

not dumb at all, this trips up a lot of new folks. so basically each net has its own culture and the net control will usually tell you what they want when they open the net. some ask for name and location every time, others are more casual and if you're a regular they already know who you are. the safest bet your first time is to listen to the whole preamble at the start — net control almost always explains the format right then.

for a plain check-in on most voice nets you'd just say your callsign phonetically and wait. net control acknowledges you, sometimes asks if you have traffic or anything to pass, and that's usually it. if they want your name and QTH they'll ask. honestly the hardest part is just making yourself key up that first time, after that it feels completely normal.

as for the special event station thing — those are a bit different. sometimes they run their own nets specifically so people can make contact with the special event callsign and log it. the net might be organized so everyone gets a turn to work the event station rather than the usual traffic net format. worth looking up the specific event details, they usually post a schedule somewhere.

yeah what he said. i was nervous my first check-in too and just kind of blurted out my call and then panicked when net control asked if i had anything to pass lol. just say no traffic and youre good. most nets are really welcoming to new people, like if you mess up the format nobody's gonna come down on you.

the civil war battlefield thing sounds cool btw, ive worked a few of those special event stations and they usually give out a certificate or a QSL card which is a nice thing to have especially early on when youre building up your log.
