APRS digipeater path settings confusing me — what am I doing wrong

 Loading...

so ive been messing around with APRS for a few months now and i think i finally have a handle on the basics but the path settings are still kind of baffling me. im running a TM-D710G with a mag mount on the car and using WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 which i thought was the standard recommendation but im seeing my station show up on aprs.fi sometimes and then completely disappear for like 20-30 minutes even when im moving around in an area i know has decent digipeater coverage.

i checked and the digipeaters near me are definitely active, i can see other stations getting gated fine. is there something about the transmit interval maybe? im currently set to every 30 seconds which felt right for mobile but maybe thats too aggressive and im getting blocked somewhere? also not sure if my symbol is set correctly, im using the car symbol but i read somewhere that matters for how some igates handle things.

tried searching the archives but got a lot of conflicting info from like 2009 that may or may not apply to how the network works now. any help appreciated

30 seconds is probably your problem honestly. for mobile in a suburban or urban area thats way too frequent and youll actually get dropped by digipeaters that have rate limiting. most of the better digi configs these days will start ignoring you if you hammer them that fast, especially if youre not moving much. bump it to 60 or even 90 seconds and use the SmartBeaconing feature if your radio supports it — the D710 definitely does. that way it beacons faster when youre turning or accelerating and backs off when youre cruising a straight road. way more polite to the network and youll actually get heard more reliably. the WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 path is fine, thats the right call for most of the US.

yeah what the other guy said about smartbeaconing is spot on. also just double check your SSID — if youre mobile you should really be on -9, some igates and aggregators do filter or display differently depending on SSID. probably not your main issue but worth verifying. the symbol thing doesnt really affect gating, thats more just cosmetic on the map.
