confused about how DXCC credits actually work - do you need QSLs for all of them?

 Loading...

so ive been chasing DX for about a year now and i keep hearing people talk about DXCC and WAS and WAZ and honestly i wasnt totally sure how they all fit together until recently. i think i finally understand the basics but the QSL card thing is still tripping me up a little.

like for DXCC specifically, do you have to have a physical QSL card for every entity you want credit for, or can you use LoTW confirmations for all of them? i've been logging to LoTW since day one which i thought was the smart move but now someone at my local club said some entities dont upload to LoTW and you basically have to get a paper card. is that true for most of the rare ones?

also is there any overlap between chasing DXCC and working toward WAZ - like if i work a station in zone 14 that also happens to be a new entity for me, does that count toward both awards simultaneously or do i have to do something special to make that happen. feels like it should just work but i dont want to assume.

been using TQSL for uploads and everything seems to be going through fine, just trying to figure out the bigger picture of how to actually apply when the time comes. any help appreciated, this stuff is more complicated than i expected when i first got my ticket

yeah LoTW is definitely the way to go and you're smart for starting with it early. the short answer is yes, LoTW confirmations count for DXCC credits just like paper QSLs do, and honestly most serious DXpeditions upload to LoTW pretty quickly after they get home. but you're right that some of the rarer entities - like some of the Pacific ones or places where the operator is just some local guy who got on once - those guys might never upload to LoTW and you'd need a paper card via the bureau or direct.

as for DXCC vs WAZ, yes they count simultaneously, you dont have to do anything special. if you work JA3whatever and it's a new zone AND a new entity, both get credited when you log it. just make sure your logging software is tracking zones properly, some of them need a little nudge to assign the right ITU or CQ zone depending on the callsign prefix. when you go to apply you'll submit them separately to ARRL but the underlying QSOs are the same.

WAS is actually the simplest one in my opinion - just need one confirmed contact per US state. some people forget Alaska and Hawaii count and are actually sometimes harder to work than you'd think depending on band conditions where you are.

im in almost the exact same boat as you, just got my general like 8 months ago and started logging everything to LoTW right away. one thing that helped me was downloading the ARRL DXCC entity list and just going through it in my logging software to see what ive already worked vs confirmed. it was kind of eye opening how many i had worked but not gotten a confirmation back yet.

the bureau cards thing is its own whole rabbit hole honestly. i set up an outgoing bureau account through my section and it takes foreverrr to get stuff back but its way cheaper than going direct for every card. for the rare stuff though i just bite the bullet and go direct with a green stamp or two and hope for the best
