first SOTA activation attempt didn't go quite as planned lol

so i finally decided to stop chasing from home and actually get out and do an activation. picked what looked like a pretty easy summit, W4T/SU-068, the trailhead was only about a mile from a pulloff and the elevation gain wasnt too bad on paper. packed up my KX2, a 40m end fed, some paracord, maybe 3 hours of food and water because i figured how long could this really take

well. the trail was overgrown and i missed a turn and ended up adding like an extra mile each way, and by the time i got to the activation zone i was pretty tired and kind of rushed setting up the antenna. got it draped over a branch at a bad angle and my SWR was showing something ugly. managed to coax 4 contacts out of it before a storm started rolling in from the west and i had to pack up fast

technically i think i qualified the summit? i got 4 QSOs but one of them i'm not 100% sure i gave them my callsign correctly because the wind was picking up and things got chaotic. does that count or do i need to be sure all 4 were clean. also for next time, any tips on getting wire antennas up faster when you're alone and in a hurry. the branch method felt super sketchy

congrats on getting out there, honestly the first one is always kind of a mess and thats fine. for the QSO question -- the general guidance ive seen is that as long as YOU logged them with their callsign and gave your call at some point during the exchange, it should count. if you're really unsure about that one contact just log the 3 you're confident about, 4 is the minimum but if you only have 3 solid ones just... maybe try again. the summit will still be there and now you know the trail.

for antenna deployment solo, i switched to using a small fishing pole style mast, i use a 6m telescoping fiberglass one that collapses down pretty small. i can have an EFHW up in like 5 minutes now. way better than fighting tree branches especially when weather is coming in. also pre-marking your antenna with colored tape at the feedpoint so you're not fumbling in the wind trying to figure out which end is which sounds dumb but it's saved me so much time

yeah the fishing pole thing is the move, everyone i know who does SOTA regularly uses one. also get yourself on the SOTA watch or sotawatch3 site and post a spot before you leave the trailhead if you have cell signal, chasers will be waiting for you and your 4 contacts go by way faster than you'd think. i sometimes get my 4 in like the first 8 minutes if conditions are decent and ive spotted myself
