trying to find a good net to check in to — where do you guys start?

 Loading...

so ive been licensed for about 8 months now (general class) and i keep hearing people talk about checking into nets but honestly i have no idea where to even begin. like i know they exist and i know the concept but finding one that actually has activity in my area is another thing entirely. i tried the ARRL net directory a few times but half the frequencies i tune to just sound dead or i cant tell if im even on the right time.

also someone at my club mentioned there are special event stations that do on air contacts for like historical anniversaries and stuff — is that a separate thing from nets entirely or do some nets do special events too? i feel like im missing something obvious here. any advice on how to actually get my first real check in would be great, im getting a little tired of just scanning around hoping something happens

totally been there, dont get discouraged. the net directory can be hit or miss honestly, a lot of those listings are outdated by years. best thing i ever did was just ask at my local club meeting which nets the members actually check into regularly — turns out there was a 2m net running tuesday nights like 10 miles away that wasnt even in the directory anymore because the net manager never updated it.

for special event stations that's kind of a separate world from regular nets. you can find those on the ARRL special event station page, they list them by date and they're usually one time things for like lighthouses, historical sites, anniversaries of battles, that kind of thing. the lighthouse weekend in august is a big one if you havent heard of it. you work em and sometimes get a certificate or QSL card. its pretty fun once you do your first one, not scary at all. just call their callsign and give your call and signal report and youre done basically.

yeah what he said about asking locally is the move. also -- and this might sound dumb but it helped me -- just listen to a full net cycle before you try to check in. like sit there for the whole thing and get a feel for the pacing, when the net control calls for check ins, how people respond. some nets want you to just give your callsign, some want callsign and name and location. if you jump in without knowing the format it can get a little awkward lol. nothing bad happens but still.

theres also some HF nets that are great for general class, the 40m band has tons of activity especially evenings. 7.250 area has all kinds of stuff going on if conditions are decent.
