finally decided to go for the extra class, is it actually worth it or am i just chasing a license

so ive been a general for about 3 years now and honestly i keep going back and forth on whether to bother with the extra. like i mostly do HF, some 40m and 20m SSB, occasional PSK31 when im feeling patient. the general privileges have been fine for what i do but i keep seeing guys mention those extra-only segments and wondering if im missing out on anything real or if its just like... bragging rights basically.

the theory side of the test is what has me nervous tbh. i looked at some practice questions and the stuff about filter design and transmission line theory and complex impedance calculations is not exactly something i can just memorize my way through. or can i? i genuinely dont know how deep you have to actually understand it vs just recognizing the right answer. anyone go through this recently and have a sense of how hard it actually is if youre coming from general?

honestly the memorization approach works better than most people expect, at least for passing the test. i wont pretend i fully understood every question about chebyshev filters or whatever when i took mine, but if you grind through the question pool enough times the patterns start sticking. that said i did find that understanding even a rough conceptual version of whats going on with things like skin effect or the smith chart made it way easier to remember the right answers, because its not just random anymore it actually makes a little sense.

the extra segments are genuinely useful if you do any contesting or if you want to work DX stations that tend to hang around the edges of the bands where the pileups are a bit thinner. on 40m especially that extra sliver near the bottom is nice. whether its worth it for casual SSB use i mean thats kind of up to you but i dont regret it at all, the process of studying made me a better operator even if some of the theory went over my head.

im in almost the exact same boat lol, been general for two years and just started looking at the extra pool last month. the transmission line stuff is rough, like i had to watch like four different youtube videos about standing wave theory before it started clicking even a little bit. but the practice tests on hamstudy.org are really good, i just do like 20-30 questions a night and my scores are already getting better after a couple weeks. havent scheduled the actual exam yet but im getting closer
