first POTA activation didn't go exactly as planned but still logged 10 contacts

 Loading...

so i finally did my first ever POTA activation last weekend at a state park about 45 minutes from my house, K-4812 if anyone's familiar with it. i was so nervous honestly, had my KX2 and a 40m end fed strung up between two trees and i kept second guessing whether i had enough wire out. spotted myself on the POTA website maybe 15 minutes after i set up and the pile started almost immediately which kind of freaked me out because i wasnt expecting that many people calling at once.

ended up with 10 contacts in about 35 minutes which i know qualifies the activation but i feel like i left a lot on the table. i had a couple guys come back to me that i just couldnt pull out of the noise and i think i made a few logging errors in my paper log that i had to go back and guess at when i was entering everything into the POTA website later. also completely forgot to try and work any of the other activators that were out that day for a P2P which someone told me counts double or something like that.

anyway just wanted to share, planning to go back out next month and hopefully do better. any tips for managing a pile when youre running QRP? i felt like i was just barely keeping up

congrats on your first activation man, 10 contacts at QRP is nothing to sneeze at, especially if conditions weren't great. the pile management thing gets easier with practice, what helped me early on was just slowing down and really committing to one call at a time instead of panicking and trying to grab whoever i could hear. a lot of activators do the tail-end technique where you just listen for the last bit of a callsign and work from there.

for the P2P thing yeah it counts as a qualifying contact on both ends so its worth keeping an eye on the spots page while youre out if you can manage it. i usually have the POTA website open on my phone on one side and my logging app on the other. hamrs or fast log entry work pretty well for field logging if you want to ditch the paper, saved me a lot of headache on uploads. dont stress too much about the errors on the first one, the system is pretty forgiving and you can always add a note when you submit.

oh man the first pile up is such a rush isnt it, even at 5 watts i had the same experience. i was completely flustered and i think i just kept saying QRZ over and over without actually working anyone for like two minutes lol. you'll get the hang of it. 10 contacts qualifies and thats what matters for your first one
