so i've only had my ticket for about 4 months and i finally worked up the nerve to check in to our local 2m net last night. i've been listening for weeks just to get a feel for how it works before jumping in. anyway i checked in fine, net control acknowledged me, but then later when they asked if anyone had traffic or announcements i keyed up at kind of a weird time and i think i stepped on somebody. i couldn't really tell because all i heard was a weird scratchy noise and then silence and then net control said something like "please identify" and i wasn't sure if that was directed at me or someone else so i just... didn't say anything. and then the net moved on.

i felt terrible about it honestly. should i have keyed up and apologized? is there like a standard thing you're supposed to do when that happens? i also wasn't totally sure about the pause timing — how long do you actually wait before keying up to make sure someone is done talking? i feel like my radio might have a slight delay or something but also i'm probably just impatient. any advice would be appreciated, dont want to be that guy who ruins the net lol

oh man don't sweat it, literally everyone does this at least once when they're starting out. the "please identify" thing — yeah net control probably heard the collision and was asking whoever keyed up to try again. best thing in that situation is to just wait a beat and then say your callsign so they know who was trying to get through. you dont have to make a big apology out of it, just id yourself and it's fine.

the timing thing is real and it takes a while to get the feel for it. on a repeater there's usually a little tail after someone unkeys — that short bit of carrier before the squelch closes — and waiting for that plus maybe a one or two second pause is usually enough. some people count to two in their head before keying. also sometimes the repeater itself has a courtesy tone which is kind of your green light. if your net has one, wait for that before jumping in and you'll almost never step on anyone. just keep showing up, it gets way more natural after a few weeks.

yeah same thing happened to me honestly. i checked in to a traffic net before i really understood how they were different from a regular ragchew net and i had no idea what i was doing lol. the net manager was nice about it though.

one thing i'd add is if you really feel bad you could always email or reach out to the net control operator after — a lot of them are club members and totally approachable off the air. they've seen it all and most of them were new once too. the fact that you were listening for weeks before jumping in is honestly more than most people do so you're already ahead of the curve imo
