solar flux has been nuts lately — anyone else getting weird band conditions?

so ive been noticing some really strange stuff happening on 10 and 12 meters the past few weeks. some days i can barely hear anything past a couple hundred miles and then out of nowhere i work like 6 or 7 countries in an hour. yesterday i had a solid opening to japan on 10m which i honestly wasnt expecting at all, my sfi was showing around 180 when i checked it on dxmaps.

im running a pretty modest setup, just a dipole at about 30 feet and 100 watts, so when conditions are bad they are REALLY bad for me. but on days like yesterday it honestly doesnt even matter what antenna you have i think. been chasing dx for about 3 years now and i dont think ive seen the flux jump around this much in a single week. anybody else tracking this or is it just my region doing something weird?

yeah the flux has been all over the place, you're not imagining it. we're well into solar cycle 25 now and it's actually performing better than the predictions said it would which is pretty cool to watch unfold in real time. i keep pskreporter open in a tab most of the day and some mornings i see my beacon getting heard in VK and ZL before i even finish my coffee, then by afternoon 10m sounds completely dead. the geomagnetic stuff plays a big role too, even a moderate K index can kill a promising opening fast especially on the higher bands. i'd suggest bookmarking spaceweather.com and also checking the solar terrestrial dispatch reports if you want to get a bit deeper into what's actually driving the flux numbers. it becomes kind of addictive honestly, trying to predict when a good opening is coming.

wait so higher solar flux is generally better for dx on the high bands? i'm pretty new to all this and i keep seeing people talk about SFI numbers but i was never totally sure what i should be hoping for. my tech license only lets me on a small slice of HF right now but im studying for general and trying to understand propagation before i upgrade. does the K index matter as much as the flux or is one more important than the other
