confused about the vanity callsign process — how does it actually work?

 Loading...

so i just passed my general exam last week (finally, after putting it off for like two years lol) and im trying to figure out how the callsign situation works. right now i got assigned a sequential callsign automatically through the FCC and its a 2x3 in my district which is fine i guess but ive been reading about vanity calls and now im wondering if i should just apply for one instead.

from what i understand the FCC has a system where they assign calls in a sequential order based on what pool is available in your district, but vanity lets you pick a specific call if its available? or is it more complicated than that. also does it cost money now — i heard something changed recently with fees.

i dont really have a specific call in mind, i just kind of want something shorter if possible. my assigned one is fine but a 1x3 or 2x2 would be easier to send in CW honestly. anyway if anyone has gone through this process recently id love to hear how it went

congrats on passing general, thats awesome. okay so the vanity system — yeah you can absolutely apply for a specific call as long as its available or comes available. the FCC has a searchable database (AE7Q is the one most people use, way better than the FCC's own tools honestly) where you can look up calls and see their status. if a call is unassigned you can apply for it directly. if it was previously held by a silent key or someone who let their license lapse there's usually a waiting period before it opens up to the general pool.

the sequential process they use for automatically assigning calls just works through a list — they basically go in order through available callsigns in your call district. you dont get much say in that, its just whatever is next. vanity is the way to go if you want something specific or shorter.

and yes there is a fee now, i think its around $35 through the FCC's ULS system. they started charging a few years back. its not bad for a ten year license. the vanity application itself isnt any more expensive than a regular renewal or upgrade as far as i know, same fee structure.

yeah i went through this maybe eight months ago. the AE7Q site the other guy mentioned is really the best starting point, i spent probably an hour just browsing calls before i found one i actually liked. one thing i'll add — if you apply for a vanity call and you listed multiple choices on your application (you can do that) the FCC processes them in the order you listed them so put your most wanted one first obviously. also the whole thing took maybe two weeks from application to the new call showing up in the system for me, wasnt as painful as i expected. good luck with the new ticket
