coax routing through firewall on my truck — anyone done this cleanly?

 Loading...

so ive been putting off doing a proper mobile install on my F-150 for like two years now and i finally ordered a Yaesu FTM-400 and a dual band mag mount to start with (yeah yeah i know mag mounts arent ideal but baby steps) and now im staring at the firewall trying to figure out how to get the coax inside without just cramming it through the door jamb which i did on my old car and hated every second of it

there's a factory grommet on the passenger side that looks like it might have an unused hole but i cant tell if theres anything running through it already or if poking through would cause problems. i dont really want to drill if i can avoid it. anyone done this on a newer Ford truck or just in general have a good method for running coax through the firewall without making a mess of things

on my Silverado I used the factory grommet on the drivers side, there was already a small hole in it from the factory where nothing was routed. I took a coat hanger, heated the tip slightly and just poked through. ran my PL-259 end through first. worked great, put some self-amalgamating tape around it after to keep moisture out.

honestly the grommet route is the way to go if you can find one with space. just take your time and feel around in there with a flashlight before you commit. some trucks have a plastic plug thats separate from the main grommet too, worth checking both sides.

I just did my Tacoma last month and ended up going through the door jamb anyway because i couldnt find a good grommet spot lol. it actually looks pretty clean if you use split loom and route it tight against the weatherstripping. not perfect but the radio works great so cant complain too much. the FTM-400 is a solid choice btw, display is really nice to read while driving
