proper way to join a net when you're brand new to it?

 Loading...

so i just got my technician license about three weeks ago and ive been listening to the local 2m net on tuesday evenings but i really dont know the right way to actually check in. like i know you just say your callsign but is there a specific moment you're supposed to do it, do you wait for the net control to ask for check-ins and then just throw your call out there? and what if two people transmit at the same time, does someone have priority?

also i heard someone on the net say they were a "mobile" and someone else said "portable" and i wasnt sure if that changes anything or if its just for information. my radio is a baofeng uv-5r which i know isnt everyone's favorite but it gets into the local repeater fine so im just using it for now until i figure out what i actually want. anyway any advice for a newbie trying not to embarrass himself on his first real transmission would be appreciated

welcome to the hobby, dont stress too much about the first check-in, honestly most nets are pretty forgiving especially with new hams. the basic flow is net control will open the net and then call for check-ins, sometimes they do it by region or by license class or sometimes just open it up to everyone. when they ask, you just wait for a slight pause and give your callsign clearly, something like "W1XYZ checking in" and thats really it. if two people key up at the same time net control will usually ask you both to try again one at a time.

the mobile or portable thing is just so people know your situation, mobile means youre in a car, portable usually means handheld and not at a fixed station. some nets log that info, some dont care. either way just say it if its relevant otherwise dont worry about it. the baofeng is totally fine for checking into a local net, ive seen guys use them for years. just make sure your offset and CTCSS tone are set right for your repeater and youll be good.

i was in the exact same boat like six months ago lol. what helped me was just listening to several nets before jumping in so you get a feel for the pacing of that specific group, they all have slightly different personalities if that makes sense. some net controls are really formal and some are pretty laid back. once you actually do check in the first time it feels way less scary than you built it up to be in your head, trust me on that one
