confused about where i can actually transmit on 40m as a general

 Loading...

ok so i just upgraded to general last month and im trying to figure out where i can actually operate on 40 meters. i looked up the band plan online but now im more confused than before because theres the FCC allocation, then theres the ARRL band plan, and they dont seem to match up exactly? like the FCC says i can go down to 7.175 for phone but some people are saying dont get too close to the band edges and i dont really understand why

also whats the deal with 7.125 to 7.175, i saw something about that being shared or something. sorry if this is a dumb question im still figuring all this out

not a dumb question at all, this trips up a lot of new generals. so the short version is the FCC part 97 rules are what you're legally required to follow, and the ARRL band plan is kind of a gentlemens agreement on top of that to keep things organized. you're not breaking any laws by ignoring the ARRL plan but you might step on people.

for 40m phone as a general you can operate 7.175 to 7.300 MHz. the reason people say stay away from the band edge is mostly practical — your radio's carrier or sidebands can drift a little especially if it's not warmed up, and if you're right at 7.300 you might accidentally splatter outside the band which is a violation. most people just leave a few kHz of margin. like dont set your dial to 7.299 and call CQ, just go to 7.285 or somewhere with room.

the 7.125-7.175 thing is the extra class portion for phone, generals cant use that for voice. the whole lower chunk of 40m down to 7.000 is CW and digital for generals. you can do CW down to 7.025 as a general i believe, check the current chart to be sure though.

yeah what he said. one thing i'll add is that 40m is also a shared international band and you'll sometimes hear DX stations operating below 7.175 because in ITU region 1 (europe, africa) the phone allocation goes all the way down to like 7.060 or something. so if you hear a european station at 7.150 calling CQ and everyone's working him by transmitting at 7.255 or wherever, thats a split operation and it makes sense once you understand the different regional allocations. confused me for a long time honestly
