first time checking into a net and i completely froze up lol

 Loading...

so i finally worked up the courage to check into our local 2m weekly net last night and honestly it did not go the way i planned at all. i had my callsign ready, knew the frequency, had my radio on the right offset and tone... and then when the net control called for check-ins i just sat there for like 10 seconds before finally keying up. and when i did i forgot to give my callsign phonetically which i know you're supposed to do and the net control had to ask me to repeat. felt so embarrassed even though everyone was super nice about it.

anyway my question is more general i guess — is there like an unwritten order to things when you check in? like do you wait for a pause, do you just jump in when net control says check-ins are open? and whats the deal with tail-ending, someone did it after one of the other stations and i wasnt sure if that was rude or totally normal. im only about 3 months into my ticket so still learning all this stuff.

oh man i remember my first net check-in, i was sweating like it was a final exam haha. honestly you did fine — the fact that you even keyed up puts you ahead of most new hams who just listen for months and never actually participate.

so for the timing thing, most nets will have the net control say something like "all stations wishing to check in please call now" and thats your window. you want to wait just a tiny beat to make sure nobody else is already mid-transmission, then just give your callsign phonetically, your name, and location. short and clean. if two people key up at the same time net control will usually ask you both to try again.

tail-ending is generally fine and pretty common, it just means keying up right after another station finishes to add a quick comment or answer a question. it's not rude at all as long as you id yourself. the main thing that IS considered bad form is just kerchunking the repeater or keying up over someone who's already talking. after a few more nets it'll feel totally natural, i promise.

yeah dont sweat it at all, nets are supposed to be welcoming especially for newer folks. i checked into my first net without even knowing what a traffic net was vs a casual ragchew net and ended up confused why everyone was being so formal lol. different nets have pretty different vibes so if you stick with it youll get a feel for each one pretty quick.
