first POTA activation went way better than expected - a few questions though

 Loading...

so i finally did my first activation last weekend at a state park about 45 minutes from my house. been putting it off forever because i kept telling myself i needed better gear or more practice or whatever excuse i came up with. finally just threw the KX2 and a random wire in my bag and drove out there.

set up near a picnic table, got the antenna up in a tree using a throw line (took me like 20 minutes and three attempts lol) and just started calling. honestly expected it to be a slow painful slog but i had 12 contacts in about 25 minutes and then it kind of dried up. ended up with 19 total over maybe an hour and a half which i think counts as a valid activation? the 10 contact minimum thing is what i remember reading.

anyway my questions - is there a good way to spot yourself if you dont have cell service? i was lucky and had one bar of LTE but it was barely working. also noticed a few times someone would call me and id only catch part of their callsign, is it normal to just ask for a repeat or do most people move on if they have to say it twice? and one more thing - whats the deal with P2P contacts, i saw that mentioned somewhere but couldnt find a clear explanation of what makes them special beyond just both operators being in a park at the same time.

congrats on getting out there, that first one is always the hardest to actually make happen. 19 contacts is a solid activation, yeah the minimum is 10 so you're well clear of that.

for spotting without cell service - a lot of people use APRS to self-spot if they have that capability, or some folks will ask a friend to spot them via the POTA website if they can arrange it ahead of time. there's also the option of just posting your planned activation the day before in the POTA app under the schedule feature, hunters will sometimes check that and watch for you even if you're not actively spotted. honestly though once you're on frequency and calling CQ POTA for a few minutes a lot of the time someone will spot you themselves, happened to me plenty of times when i had no signal at all.

asking for a repeat is completely normal and expected, nobody's going to get annoyed at that. just say "again please" or "please repeat your callsign" and they'll come back. better to get it right than log a busted call. P2P contacts are just two activators making contact while both are actively activating a park - they're worth a little extra credit in the app for both people and hunters get credit for the contact too. it's kind of a fun bonus when it happens, especially if you stumble across one unexpectedly while you're in the middle of your own activation.

im pretty much in the same boat as you, only done two activations so far. the spotting thing stressed me out too before my first one but honestly the hunters are really patient and if you just keep calling someone usually picks you up and posts you to the network pretty quick. both times i had no real cell service and it worked out fine once i was actually transmitting.

one thing that helped me was downloading the POTA app and putting in my planned activation ahead of time the night before. some hunters check that and will actually be listening for you which is kind of cool, felt like people were actually waiting which made me way less nervous about getting on the air.
