first WWFF activation - what am I actually supposed to do out there?

 Loading...

so ive been doing POTA for a while now and someone at the club meeting mentioned WWFF and i looked it up and honestly im a bit confused about how it all works. like i understand you go to a nature area and make contacts but is it the same as POTA or is there a separate log you have to submit somewhere else? and do the parks overlap, like if im at a state park that has a POTA reference does it also have a WWFF reference or are they totally different?

also i saw something about needing 44 contacts to qualify an activation which seems like a lot compared to POTA. is that right? i dont want to drive an hour into the woods and come home with nothing to show for it. any tips from people who have actually done this would be really helpful, im still pretty new to portable operating in general

yeah the 44 QSO minimum is real and it does seem daunting at first but honestly once you get set up and start calling CQ it goes faster than you think especially on 20m during a decent part of the day. the POTA and WWFF references can overlap yes, a lot of US national forests and wildlife refuges have both a K- number and a WWFF reference, you just log both and submit to each program separately. the WWFF log goes to wwff.us if youre in North America or through the global WWFF logbook system depending on where you register.

one thing that helped me early on was spotting yourself on the WWFF spotter page, not just POTA spots. there are hunters specifically looking for WWFF activations who wont necessarily be watching the POTA cluster. made a huge difference in my pile up speed. good luck on your first one, its a lot of fun once you get the hang of the rhythm

i just did my third activation last month at a wildlife refuge and yeah its basically the same vibe as POTA just different paperwork haha. the 44 contact thing stressed me out too but i hit it in like 45 minutes on 20m SSB with 100w and a wire. bring more antenna than you think you need is my only advice
