First HT purchase - looking for advice on dual-band handhelds

Just passed my Tech exam last month and I'm ready to get my first handheld! I've been lurking on the local repeater with an RTL-SDR, but it's time to actually transmit. My budget is around $200-300 for something that'll last. I've narrowed it down to a few options:

  • Yaesu FT5DR - feature-packed with waterproofing and color touchscreen
  • Yaesu FT-60R - priced around $180 with excellent value
  • ICOM ID-52A Plus - offers D-STAR with Bluetooth for under $700

Which would you recommend for a new ham who wants to grow into the hobby? I'm interested in emergency communications and maybe exploring digital modes down the road.

Welcome to the hobby! For around $120 the FT-65 gives you similar features to Baofeng but in a more rugged case. However, if you're serious about digital modes, the FT5DR supports System Fusion and is easy to set up even for digital newcomers. It's a bigger investment but will definitely grow with you. 73!

I started with a Baofeng UV-5R for unbeatable value - owned several over the years with reliable performance. But honestly, if your budget allows for the FT5DR, go for it! The digital capability and waterproofing will serve you well for years. Don't forget to budget for a programming cable too.

Another vote for the FT5DR here - I've used mine for ARES work and the rugged design with waterproofing has saved me during field operations. The APRS functionality is fantastic for emergency work. Check RepeaterBook.com to see what digital modes are active in your area before committing to any specific format though.
