asked a dumb question on a net last night and felt bad about it

so i finally worked up the nerve to check in on the local tuesday night net after just listening for like three months. been licensed since spring but honestly the whole net procedure thing intimidated me more than i expected. anyway the net control called for check ins and i keyed up and gave my call but then he asked if i had traffic and i just kind of... froze and said no but then rambled something about being new and it just felt awkward. nobody was rude or anything but i could tell i kind of stepped on the flow a little.

i guess my question is — is there like a standard way you're supposed to check in that i should have known? i feel like i missed something obvious. also does traffic mean actual formal written messages or can it be like a question you want to ask the group? ive been reading stuff online but everyone seems to assume you already know how nets work

oh man dont feel bad at all, seriously everyone does something like that their first few times on a net. I remember my first check in i gave my call sign and then just went completely silent and the net control had to prompt me twice. its a little nerve wracking when you know other people are listening.

traffic in the net sense usually means formal radiogram traffic — like messages following the NTS format that need to be passed to someone. most casual local nets you can just say "no traffic" or sometimes they'll ask if you have any comments or announcements and thats where you can say hey im new or whatever. but honestly every net runs a little differently so after a few weeks of listening you kind of pick up on how that specific one flows. the fact that you checked in at all is the main thing, nobody expects perfection from a first timer.

yeah what he said. also if you're not sure what to say just listen to how other people check in before you key up. i do that whenever i join a net i havent been on before, even now after like 12 years. some nets are super formal and some are just people chatting with a loose structure. the net control on a good net will guide you through it if you seem lost, thats literally part of their job. sounds like yours was decent about it.
