so i got my general ticket back in the spring and ive been mostly doing local nets and some digital stuff but everyone keeps telling me i should try a contest and CQ WW is apparently the big one coming up. the thing is i honestly dont really understand how it works. like i get that you exchange signal reports and stuff but what counts as a contact, how do zones work, and do i need special software or can i just log on paper for a casual entry.

also is it worth even trying if i only have a dipole and 100 watts? feels like id just be getting walked over by guys with stacked yagis and a kilowatt. not trying to win anything just want to see what the fuss is about i guess

oh man go for it, CQ WW is a blast even if you're running barefoot into a wire antenna. seriously dont let the big gun stations intimidate you. yeah they'll work more multipliers than you but that doesnt mean you wont have fun pulling in dx from europe or south america when the bands open up. 100 watts and a decent dipole can absolutely work.

for logging get N1MM+ it's free and basically the standard for HF contesting, has the exchange built in and keeps track of your zones automatically. the zones thing is ITU vs CQ zones depending on the contest — CQ WW uses CQ zones, you can find a map online just print it out before the weekend. the exchange is just 59 and your zone number, people go fast so just listen to a few QSOs first to get the rhythm. honestly the first hour feels chaotic and then it clicks

paper logging is totally fine if youre just dabbling, i did my first few contests that way. but yeah N1MM is worth learning even if it feels like a lot at first. also Field Day in June is maybe a friendlier starting point if you want something more relaxed and community oriented — lots of clubs set up and welcome newcomers to sit in. CQ WW is great but it is pretty intense compared to Field Day where theres usually someone around to explain whats happening
