thinking about taking the general exam, few questions about what to expect

 Loading...

so ive been a tech for about two years now and mostly been doing 2m/70cm stuff, some APRS, helped out with a couple public service events. its been fun but honestly i feel like im kind of hitting a ceiling with what i can do locally and ive been wanting to get on HF for a while now. my buddy keeps telling me to just go take the general exam already.

my question is kind of all over the place so bear with me. the general pool feels like a big jump from the tech stuff, especially all the electrical stuff and the propagation questions. im using hamstudy.org which seems decent but some of the questions i feel like im just memorizing the answer without really understanding why its the answer, like some of the impedance matching stuff and the formula questions. is that okay or is it gonna bite me later when im actually operating.

also what actually opens up when you pass, like i know its HF but can someone give me a real world sense of what changes. and do i need new gear right away or can i do anything with what i have

the memorization thing is pretty normal honestly and most people do it for at least some of the questions. the exam isnt trying to make you an engineer, its just a baseline. the stuff you dont fully understand will start clicking once youre actually on HF and dealing with real situations, like when your antenna isnt resonant and you can see the SWR going crazy it suddenly makes a lot more sense than reading about it in a book.

for what opens up — you get most of the HF bands, 40m is probably where youll spend a lot of time starting out because its pretty forgiving and theres almost always someone to talk to day or night. 20m is the classic DX band and can be incredible when conditions are good. you wont have full privileges everywhere right away because theres still some stuff reserved for Extra but theres plenty to keep you busy. as for gear you probably need at least a basic HF rig obviously but dont go crazy right away, a used Icom 7300 or even something older like an 718 will get you on the air without breaking the bank. antenna is honestly more important than the radio when youre starting out.

went through the exact same thing like 8 months ago. just take the test, i studied for maybe 3 weeks with hamstudy and passed fine. the formula questions i basically just learned which formula goes with which question lol, i didnt deeply understand all of it and i still passed no problem. youll learn more by actually getting on air than from any amount of studying i promise.

one thing i wasnt expecting — even after i got my General it took me a little while to actually get a QSO because HF feels different, like you have to learn when to transmit and the whole rhythm of a pileup or just a regular SSB contact is different than FM. but its addicting once it clicks
