question about jumping into a net for the first time — feeling nervous about it

 Loading...

so ive been licensed for about 4 months now (technician) and i finally upgraded to general last week which im really happy about. ive been listening to a local 2m net on tuesday nights for a while and i think i want to check in this week but honestly im a little intimidated. like what if i say the wrong thing or step on someone or forget the procedure mid-sentence and everyone just hears dead air.

i know the basic format from listening — net control calls for check-ins, you give your callsign phonetically, you say if you have traffic or just checking in. but is there anything else i should know going in? also is it weird to just check in and not really have anything to say? i dont want to waste everyones time but i also want to participate. any advice from people who have done this a lot would be really appreciated

oh man i remember that feeling exactly. first time i checked into a net i completely blanked on my own callsign for like two seconds and just sat there. net control was super patient though and honestly most nets are pretty forgiving especially local ones.

checking in with no traffic is totally normal, thats like 90% of check-ins on a typical club net. just say your callsign phonetically, your name, and something like "no traffic, just checking in" and youre done. net control will acknowledge you and move on. the whole thing takes maybe 15 seconds. the nets i run on are happy just to know someones listening and participating even if you dont have anything to say.

one thing that helped me early on was writing out what i was going to say on a notepad before i keyed up. sounds silly but it really does help until it becomes second nature. after a few weeks you wont even think about it

yeah dont overthink it. stepping on someone is way less likely than you think because net control kind of manages the timing. worst case you double with somebody and net control just asks you to go again, happens to everyone including people whove been doing this for years. i did it just last month actually and ive been licensed since 98 lol
