Extra Class Frequency Privileges - What exactly do you gain?

Can someone break down the specific Extra Class frequency privileges? I keep reading about "exclusive segments" but I'd like to understand exactly what additional spectrum you get access to.

I'm particularly interested in HF since I do mostly CW and some digital modes.

  • Which bands have Extra-only segments?
  • How much additional spectrum are we talking about?
  • Are these segments typically more active than the General portions?

The Extra-only segments are on 80, 40, 20, and 15 meters. On 40M for example, General voice is 7.175-7.300 MHz, but Extra gets 7.125-7.175 MHz as well. You get extra segments within those four bands that can make a big difference.

The Extra segments are usually toward the center of the phone portions where antennas have better SWR. On 20 meters, that bottom 25 kHz from 14.150-14.175 is prime real estate for DX work, especially during contests when the General portion gets packed.

Don't forget you also get full privileges on all frequencies authorized by the FCC for Amateur Radio - not just the HF extras. Plus it's nice having the highest license class when dealing with other hams or getting involved in emergency communications coordination.
