Vanity callsign strategy - worth applying for multiples?

I'm an Extra looking at some 1x2 calls that will be available soon. Competition for these callsigns is usually strong, so you'll want to apply on the day they first become available after the 2 year grace period expires. Found two calls I really like that become available three days apart.

Thinking about applying for both since vanity applications with the same receipt date are processed in random order - basically a lottery system. You can list up to twenty-five call signs in order of preference but these are on different availability dates. Anyone had success with this approach or should I just pick my favorite and focus on that one?

I'd focus on your top choice rather than spreading yourself thin. Each application requires a $35 fee, and with the lottery system, multiple applications don't really improve your odds for specific calls. Better to put all your research into finding the best single target.

Actually tried this exact strategy last year - applied for two different 1x2s a few days apart. Lost the first lottery but won the second one! Just make sure you're prepared to pay both fees upfront and be happy with either outcome. Applications typically take 18 days to process so timing works out.

Check AE7Q and RadioQTH thoroughly before committing. The AE7Q and RadioQTH sites will show available callsigns. Sometimes what looks like it'll be available gets snatched up by relatives or former holders before the general availability date. Save yourself the application fees and heartache!
