so i finally worked up the nerve to check into the tuesday evening 2m net on our local repeater, been listening for like 3 weeks just to get a feel for how it goes. the net control called for check-ins and i keyed up and just... went blank for a second. remembered my callsign and said it but then completely forgot to give my name and location like everyone else was doing. net control was super nice about it and just asked me for my info but i was pretty embarassed.

is there like an unwritten script people follow for these things? i know every net is different but is there a general format i should learn? also is it rude to just listen and not check in, ive been doing that for weeks and wasnt sure if thats frowned upon

ha dont worry about it, literally everyone does exactly that the first time. i blanked so hard on my first net check-in that i forgot my callsign halfway through and had to start over. net control has heard it all, they're not going to think less of you.

for most local nets the format is pretty simple — callsign, first name, location, and sometimes signal report if they ask. some nets also want to know if you have traffic or announcements. best thing to do is just write it down on a notepad before you key up. like literally have it in front of you. "this is W4XYZ, John, in Springfield, no traffic" or whatever. after a few times it becomes automatic but there's zero shame in reading from notes especially at first.

and no, just listening is totally fine. lurking on a net isnt rude at all, lots of people do it. you're not obligated to check in ever if you dont want to.

yeah same thing happened to me a few months ago lol. what helped me was that our club actually has a training net specifically for new people and the net control kind of walks you through it. might be worth asking your local club if they have something like that, or even just emailing the net manager and asking them to explain the format. in my experience net managers love when new hams reach out, they'd rather have you check in imperfectly than not at all
