I've been asked to fill in as NCS for our weekly club net, but I'm honestly pretty nervous about it. I've been checking in for about six months now, but the thought of actually running the net has me worried. Any tips for a first-time net control operator? I know the format but I'm afraid I'll forget something important or stumble over my words.

Be sure to say exactly what you mean. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK! Write down your format beforehand - opening, check-ins, closing. Most folks are very understanding of new NCS operators. We've all been there!

I was terrified my first time too! After a suitable period, he/she should then acknowledge those received and ask for any additions or corrections to call signs. Keep it simple and don't worry about being perfect - the net will flow naturally.

All messages, transmissions and directions should be in plain language. Use of CB words, "Q" signal on phone, 10 codes or other jargon should be avoided. Just be yourself and use normal conversational English.
