confused about what i can and cant transmit on — Part 97 question

 Loading...

ok so i just got my technician license like 3 weeks ago and im still trying to wrap my head around what exactly im allowed to do. i understand the basic band privileges but what i dont get is the rules around like... content? someone at my club mentioned something about business communications being prohibited and i wasnt sure if that meant i literally cant mention my job or if its more specific than that. also heard something about not being able to play music which makes sense i guess but then what about like nets that do trivia or whatever, is that considered entertainment and does that run into any rules

i tried reading Part 97 directly but its kind of dense and i kept getting lost around the definitions section. just want to make sure im not doing something dumb on the air without realizing it

yeah the business communications thing trips up a lot of new hams. basically the rule is you cant use amateur radio to conduct business — so like calling a customer, coordinating work stuff, anything that substitutes for what youd normally pay for commercially. but just mentioning that you work somewhere or what you do for a living in normal conversation is totally fine, thats not what the rule is going after.

the music thing is pretty straightforward, its in there as prohibited obscuring the meaning of transmissions or something like that, and broadcasting in general is prohibited which is the bigger umbrella. nets doing trivia are generally fine because theyre not broadcasting to the general public, theres a two-way communication happening and its incidental. nobody is really worried about that kind of thing. your biggest practical concerns as a new tech are probably just staying in your authorized band segments and identifying properly every 10 minutes and at the end of contact. rest of it kinda becomes second nature.

the ARRL has a pretty decent plain english summary of Part 97 if the actual FCC document is too much. i spent like an hour confused by the same section when i was studying and the ARRL handbook version made way more sense. also honestly just ask on your club's net, most guys have been doing this long enough they know when something is or isnt an issue
