New ham confused about LoTW vs eQSL - which one should I use?

Just got my Tech license a month ago and I'm making my first HF contacts! I keep hearing about LoTW and eQSL for confirming QSOs digitally, but I'm really confused about which system I should use. Are they both free? Do I need both? I'd love to work toward some awards eventually but don't want to miss out on confirmations because I picked the wrong system.

Also saw some mentions of QRZ logbook - is that different from these two? Any guidance from you elmers would be really appreciated!

Congrats on the new license! LoTW confirmations count for ARRL awards like DXCC and WAS, while the ARRL does not recognize eQSL for awards credit. Both are free to use - I'd suggest setting up both since some hams use one while others use another, so if you're only on one you'll miss confirmations. Start with LoTW for awards, add eQSL for more coverage.

I use both LoTW and eQSL, plus QRZ logbook. Most guys and gals will QSL electronically now a days, and having accounts on multiple systems really helps your confirmation rate. The majority of logging software actually support eQSL integration so once you get logging software set up, it can automatically upload to both systems for you.

Welcome to the hobby! I was in the same boat a couple years ago. Set up LoTW first since it's the gold standard for awards, but definitely get an eQSL account too. eQSL is used by many radio amateurs, especially for confirming connections in the digimodes. You can always print out nice-looking eQSL cards if you want something physical for your shack wall!
