First time joining ARES/RACES - feeling overwhelmed by requirements

Hi all, KJ4ABC here. I just got my Tech license last month and I'm interested in joining my local ARES group. I attended a meeting and the EC handed me this thick training manual with all these FEMA course requirements (IS-100, IS-700, etc.). Apparently I need to complete 5 online courses just to start, plus there's talk of different training levels and task books.

For someone new to emergency communications, where should I start? I see FEMA IS-100 and IS-700 are recommended, plus SKYWARN training. Should I focus on getting my General upgrade first, or dive into the emergency training? Any advice from experienced ARES folks would be appreciated!

Welcome to ARES! Don't let the training requirements intimidate you. The Level 1 baseline is just the starting point - it sets initial requirements but won't be enough for field deployment anyway. Start with the FEMA courses since they're free online, then work on your radio skills through nets.

I was in your shoes 6 months ago - completely overwhelmed! Focus on IS-100 and IS-700 first, they're the foundation. Most ARES folks start with basic FM voice on 2 meters, and you'll build skills through net check-ins and exercises. Your Tech license is fine to start with.

The training might seem like a lot, but it's designed to prepare you for real emergencies. Level 1 is for those new to emergency communications, and your local ARES group will adapt the training to meet local needs. Attend a few nets first to get comfortable with radio procedures, then tackle the online courses.
