solar flux been weird lately — anyone else noticing 10m acting up?

 Loading...

so ive been watching the solar flux index pretty closely for the past few weeks and something feels off to me. we're supposedly in a decent part of the cycle right now but 10m has been really inconsistent. some afternoons it just opens up like crazy and i can work europe no problem from the midwest, then the next day at the same time its basically dead. like i can hear a carrier or two but nothing workable.

checked the DXmaps site and there were some spots showing openings but i wasnt hearing any of it. my setup hasnt changed, still running the same dipole at about 30 feet. wondering if its a geomagnetic thing or just me. K index looked elevated a couple days ago which might explain some of it but even on days when its been quiet the band seems unpredictable. anyone else seeing this or am i just chasing my tail here

yeah 10 has been doing exactly that for me too, im down in texas and its been feast or famine all month. what i've noticed is the openings are real but they're shorter than they used to be and they move around more in terms of direction. like one afternoon i had a solid path to japan for maybe 45 minutes then it just evaporated. the geomagnetic stuff definitely plays a role but honestly even with a clean K index it's been flaky. part of it might be that we're past the solar maximum peak and the flux is starting to drift a bit even if it's still high overall. i'd keep an eye on the NOAA 3-day forecast and also check the real-time A index not just K, the A gives you a better picture of how the day has settled out. dont give up on it though because when 10 decides to open up properly right now it is genuinely incredible

I'm pretty new to HF so take this for what its worth but I had the same thing happen last Thursday. Was tuning around 28.4 or so and suddenly heard a pile of Europeans clear as a bell, worked three of them in like ten minutes and then nothing. My elmer told me that's pretty normal for 10 near the peak, something about sporadic-E layering on top of F2 propagation but I honestly didn't follow all of it. he said the DX cluster is your friend for knowing when a path is actually open vs just teasing you.
