Homebrew collinear vs commercial - real-world performance comparison

Just finished my first homebrew collinear using half-wave wire elements in PVC - getting 1.2:1 SWR at 146MHz and can now hit repeaters 60-75 miles out full quieting from my QTH. This gives me about 10dB gain over my old 1/4-wave mag mount, similar to what I've read about other homebrew designs. For those running commercial collinears like Diamond X-series - how does real-world DX performance compare? Considering upgrading to something like an X-500 but wondering if the extra cost over homebrew is justified for VHF/UHF work.

Your homebrew sounds like it's performing well! Commercial collinears typically give 6dB with 8 half-wave sections, maybe 9dB with 16 sections. The real advantage of commercial units is mechanical reliability and consistent performance - no tuning headaches.

I've run both Diamond X-500 and homebrew designs. The commercial antennas excel in bandwidth and consistent gain across the entire band, while homebrew often peaks at one frequency. For contest work where you need reliable performance across 2m and 70cm simultaneously, commercial wins every time.

That's impressive range! My advice - if your homebrew is working that well, stick with it until you have a specific need the commercial antenna addresses. Maybe invest the money saved in better coax or a mast-mounted preamp instead.
