confused about vanity callsigns and how the whole process works

 Loading...

ok so i just passed my general last month and im still using my sequential callsign which is kind of a mouthful honestly. a guy at the club mentioned i could apply for a vanity call and i looked it up on the ULS but now im more confused than before

like is there a waiting period after you get your license before you can apply? and how do you even know which calls are available? i tried searching a few on the FCC database but some show up as expired and im not sure if that means they're up for grabs or if theres still some holdover period where the previous holder can reclaim it or something

also does it cost anything now? i thought i read somewhere that the FCC started charging but then someone else told me that was only for new licenses not vanity... im getting conflicting info everywhere. any help appreciated, been lurking here for a while and you guys usually know whats up

yeah the vanity process can be a little confusing at first but its pretty straightforward once you get it. so expired calls do go into a pool but theres a 2 year waiting period after a callsign cancels before its available for vanity applications — used to be shorter i think but they changed it at some point. you can check availability using a site like AE7Q, way easier than trying to parse the FCC ULS directly, it'll tell you exactly when a call becomes eligible

as for cost, yes the FCC does charge now for the application, i want to say it was around $35 but double check that because it may have gone up. that applies to vanity applications too. you just file through the ULS online system, pick your preferred calls in order of preference and then wait. processing is usually pretty quick these days, sometimes just a day or two if everything is in order. one thing — make sure the call you want matches your license class, you cant apply for a 1x2 or 2x1 format on a general if you dont qualify for it based on your district and class

went through this exact same thing about a year ago. the AE7Q site the other guy mentioned is seriously the way to go, i spent way too long on the FCC site before someone pointed me to it. i got my vanity call within like 3 days of applying which honestly surprised me, i expected it to take weeks or something. good luck, its kinda fun picking one out
