finally broke a pileup on a rare one — here's what actually worked for me

 Loading...

so ive been chasing 3Y0 and a few other rare ones for years and never managed to actually break through a serious pileup until last month when there was that VK0 operation. figured id share what worked because honestly i spent way too long doing it wrong.

first thing that changed everything — i stopped calling on the DX's transmit frequency like an idiot. obvious i know but when you're excited you forget. the expedition was listening 5 up and i kept hearing guys call right on their freq, which obviously gets you nowhere and also annoys everyone.

second thing was timing. i started really listening to the rhythm of how the DX operator was working the pileup. some guys work last two letters, some work by region, some just fish around. this particular op was clearly favoring stations that called slightly after the end of his transmission rather than right on top of it. once i figured that out i adjusted and got through on maybe the 4th or 5th try instead of the 40th.

also ran my amp at about 800w rather than full legal limit — not because more power wouldnt help but because my antenna is a 3 el yagi at 45 feet and its actually pretty decent into the pacific from the midwest. throwing more power at a pileup when your signal is already solid just contributes to the noise floor for everyone else.

curious what techniques other people use. split operating, partial calls, any of that stuff work for you guys?

timing is everything honestly. ive worked some pretty rare stuff with 100w and a wire antenna just because i figured out the op's pattern before the guys running kilowatts did. there was one memorable VP8 operation where the op was clearly working by number and half the pileup didnt notice for like 20 minutes, so i just waited until he was on my number and got through pretty clean.

the partial call thing is interesting too — on cw especially if the op comes back with just a partial like "3T" you need to resist the urge to immediately blast your full call back. just send the missing portion once, clearly, and let him complete the qso. i see people send their full 6x6 call back at 30wpm in a panic and it just buries everything. also on ssb i've had good luck with sending just my suffix when the op is clearly fishing around, gets you to stand out if everyone else is sending full calls.

the split listening part is something a lot of newer ops dont practice enough. knowing where in the split window the op is actually pulling calls from takes a few minutes to figure out each time. some expeditions publish their listening range but honestly just listening for a few qsos before you start calling saves a lot of wasted effort.

yeah the timing thing is real. i also read somewhere that calling slightly off the common calling frequency within the split can help, like if everyone is piling up on 14.025 split 5 maybe try calling on 14.026 or 14.024 because the op might sweep across and pull you out of the noise easier. works sometimes, not always obviously.

tbh my biggest issue is i get nervous and start calling too fast on cw and my sent speed goes up when im excited which is dumb. i run normally at like 18-20wpm but during a big pileup ive caught myself sending 28+ which is counterproductive when the op might be running at 22. gotta match or go slightly slower than what they're sending.
