New Ham Confused About Net Check-in Procedures

Hi everyone - Just got my Technician license last month (KD1ABC) and finally worked up the courage to check into my local repeater's weekly net. I think I made some mistakes and felt pretty awkward. I waited for net control to call for check-ins, gave my call and name, but then wasn't sure what else to say or when to stop talking.

  • Should I mention I'm a new ham?
  • Do I need to give my location every time?
  • What's the proper way to sign off when checking in?
Any guidance would be really appreciated - don't want to be "that guy" who ties up the net!

Welcome to the hobby, KD1ABC! Always listen before transmitting, wait until the repeater is free before making your call, and ask if the repeater is in use first. For net check-ins, just give your call, name, and location - that's it. Observing proper radio etiquette includes avoiding unnecessary chatter, waiting for your turn to speak, and being courteous to fellow operators.

Don't worry, we've all been there! Most nets will read their format over the air at the beginning, outlining how to check in and when you'll be called on to speak. Yes, definitely mention you're new - most net controls love welcoming newcomers and will often give you extra encouragement.

I'm still pretty new myself (got my General last year) and found that listening to the net and how people are checked in provides answers about the format. Each net has its own style, so don't be afraid to ask the net control for guidance if you're unsure about something specific!
