first SOTA activation this weekend, some questions before i go up

 Loading...

so ive been chasing summits for about 6 months now and finally decided to just do an activation myself. picked out a W6 summit thats only about a 2 mile hike in, nothing crazy, figured it was a good starter. got my KX2 and a wire antenna im planning to throw up in a tree or just do a linked dipole if i can find something to hang it off of.

my main question is about the self-spotting thing. i know you can use the SOTAwatch app to spot yourself but whats the deal if you have no cell service up there? i was looking at some trip reports for this summit and it seems like coverage is pretty hit or miss. do people usually just call CQ and hope for the best, or is there a better way to handle this? ive seen mention of APRS for self-spotting but im not totally clear on how that works in practice.

also not sure if im overthinking the antenna situation. the linked dipole seems like a lot of setup for one activation but maybe it pays off on 40 and 20? any thoughts from people who have actually done this appreciated, dont want to get up there and realize ive made some dumb mistake

congrats on taking the plunge, first activation is always a bit nerve wracking but honestly once you get up there and make that first contact everything kind of clicks into place.

for the self-spotting without cell service, a lot of activators use the SMS spotting feature through SOTAwatch — you can text a specific number and it posts your spot automatically. worth setting that up before you go, sometimes you get one bar of cell service that wont load a webpage but will push a text through just fine. also if you have an HT with you, you might be able to hit a local repeater and ask someone to spot you, most hams are happy to help with that and theres usually someone monitoring who knows about SOTA.

on the antenna question, i wouldnt overthink it for your first time out. an EFHW cut for 40m will get you plenty of contacts and its simpler to deploy than a linked dipole when youre still figuring out the flow of things. you can always experiment with more complex setups once you know how the rest of the activation goes. main thing is just get up there and have fun with it, the SOTA community is super welcoming and people will chase you even if your signal isnt perfect.

APRS spotting is actually pretty slick once you get it set up — basically your HT with APRS capability can send a message to the SOTA gateway and it posts your spot to SOTAwatch automatically, no cell needed as long as there are digipeaters and igates in range. which on a summit is often better than you'd think since you have line of sight to a lot of infrastructure. look up the SOTA APRS2SOTA gateway, theres decent documentation on the SOTA reflector about it.

that said i did an activation last spring on a summit where i had zero APRS coverage and no cell either and i just called CQ SOTA on 14.285 and 7.033 and still managed 12 contacts in about 45 minutes. people do scan around looking for activators especially on weekends. just make sure your summit is listed on SOTAwatch as a planned activation beforehand if you can, a lot of chasers check that the night before and will be listening for you at the time you listed.
