confused about LoTW vs eQSL vs paper cards — do i need all three?

 Loading...

so ive been licensed about 8 months now and ive been making contacts pretty regularly, mostly HF on 40 and 20 meters. i signed up for LoTW a while back and got my certificate sorted after like three weeks of waiting on the postcard from ARRL which was a whole thing in itself. anyway i've been uploading logs and getting confirmations trickling in which is great.

but then someone on the air mentioned eQSL and said a lot of people prefer that and its faster. and then another guy sent me an actual physical QSL card in the mail through the bureau which honestly was really cool to receive, it felt more real somehow. now im wondering if i need to be doing all three of these to be a good operator or if most people just pick one. also does eQSL actually count for any awards or is it kind of a secondary thing? i dont want to set up accounts everywhere if it doesnt matter but i also dont want to miss confirmations from people who only use one system.

also side question — is the QSL bureau through your regional club or is it all through ARRL? i'm still fuzzy on how the outgoing bureau actually works for sending cards internationally.

totally get the confusion, i went through the same thing when i was starting out. short answer is most serious award chasers do use all three but you dont have to right away.

LoTW is the gold standard for ARRL awards like DXCC and WAS — those pretty much require LoTW confirmations so thats the one id prioritize if you care about chasing awards down the road. eQSL is faster and more casual, some people love it and some barely touch it. it does count for a few things but not the big ARRL stuff. i keep an eQSL account just because its easy to upload to and some DX stations are really active on there.

paper cards through the bureau are kind of their own thing — slow as molasses, sometimes takes a year or more to get cards back internationally, but theres something genuinely satisfying about a physical card from a rare country sitting in your shack. i still send them for anything unusual or when someone specifically requests a card.

for the bureau, yes if you're in the US you go through ARRL for incoming and outgoing international cards. your regional club might handle some domestic stuff but check the ARRL website for the outgoing bureau process, you basically bundle up cards and send them in with some payment per card. its cheap but slow.

yeah i use all three mostly out of habit at this point. logbook of the world is kind of annoying to set up but once its running its pretty much automatic if your logging software supports it. i use WSJT-X and JTDX and they just push to LoTW directly which is nice.

eQSL i check maybe once a month, its kind of fun to browse the cards people design. some of them are really elaborate. but like the previous guy said it doesnt count for DXCC which is the big one most people care about.

paper cards — honestly i go back and forth on these. i printed a batch of my own cards through one of the online printers and sending them out feels good but keeping up with it is a lot. i probably owe like 50 people cards right now that i havent gotten around to. dont be like me, either commit to it or dont and just say QSL via LoTW on your QRZ page so people know where to find you.
