What's working for you folks in real emergency deployments? Particularly interested in cold weather performance since we get some brutal winters up here in Minnesota. Also curious about charging - can I still use my existing SLA chargers or do I need new ones?

Budget isn't unlimited but I'm willing to invest in quality gear that'll last. Safety is obviously the top priority.

I switched to LiFePO4 last year after dragging around 60lbs of lead acid batteries one too many times! Dakota Lithium has worked great through two winter ARES exercises, no issues at -10°F. You'll need a compatible charger though - don't use your old SLA charger.

For emergency use, stick with LiFePO4 over regular Li-ion - much safer chemistry and better temperature range. I've been happy with Battle Born batteries.

• Built-in BMS is worth it for peace of mind
• Weight savings is huge for portable ops
• Initial cost hurts but they'll outlast 3-4 SLA batteries

Just remember that lithium performance can drop significantly below freezing, even LiFePO4. Keep your batteries inside your jacket if possible during winter activations. I learned this the hard way during a January POTA activation!
