Need RMS authorization - first time gateway setup questions

Looking to set up my first Winlink RMS gateway and I've been reading through the sysop guidelines. Before you inquire to run an RMS gateway station, you must first be an active user of radio email... All sysops must obtain an authorization for gateway connections to the network. I've been using Winlink Express for about 6 months now with both VHF packet and HF VARA, and I want to give back to the community by running a dual-mode gateway.

My question is about the authorization process - To request one, contact by email the Winlink administrator. Provide in your request: Your name and call sign. The base call sign of the gateway station. Do I need to have my hardware completely configured before requesting authorization, or can I get approved first and then work on the technical setup? Also, any recommendations on minimum system specs for running both RMS Packet and RMS Trimode simultaneously?

You can request authorization before your hardware is complete, but you should at least have a solid plan and the basic equipment identified. RMS Packet is simple to install and run, and requires a minimum of computer and radio equipment... The program listens for both AX.25 packet and VARA FM using single or multiple radios, TNCs, soundcard programs or 'soft modems'. For dual-mode, I'd recommend at least 4GB RAM and a decent dual-core processor - the bottleneck is usually the sound card interfaces, not CPU.

Recommend: installing RMS Relay + either Packet or Trimode at minimum - that's the minimum viable setup. I waited until I had everything working locally with P2P before requesting authorization, made the process much smoother when Steve K4CJX responded.

Make sure you understand the commitment before applying. Many sysops support their communities as part of a local emergency network... Our sysops often remark that their work as a Winlink RMS gateway station is the most deeply rewarding thing they do in amateur radio. It's not just about setting it up - reliable 24/7 operation is expected once you're authorized.
