thinking about going for the extra but not sure if its worth the effort at this point

so ive been a general for about three years now and honestly i use maybe 10% of the privileges i already have. a buddy at the club keeps telling me to just go for the extra and get it done but every time i look at the question pool i kind of freeze up. the math stuff especially, like the stuff around transmission lines and impedance and all that, it genuinely looks like college coursework to me.

i guess my real question is do people actually USE the extra privileges in any meaningful way or is it mostly just a vanity thing at that point. like is there actually more activity on the extra portions of the bands or is it kind of dead down there. and also how long did it realistically take people to actually feel ready for the test, not just pass it by memorizing answers but actually understand whats going on

honestly the extra sub-bands are worth it if you do any serious HF work, especially on 40 and 75/80 meters. theres a noticeable difference in congestion once you can work down in the extra portion, particularly on weekends when general is a madhouse. i noticed it immediately after i upgraded.

as for the theory stuff, i wont lie to you, some of it is genuinely hard if you havent touched math in a while. the transmission line sections and the filter design questions gave me the most trouble. i ended up spending probably 6 weeks going through the ARRL Extra Class License Manual and doing practice exams every few days on hamstudy. the thing is even if you memorize some of the harder questions to pass, just being exposed to the material kind of seeds stuff in your brain and it starts making more sense over time once you get on the air and start tinkering. i'd say do it, worst case you learn a bunch of stuff even if you don't pass first try

im in basically the same boat as you except i havent pulled the trigger yet either lol. did you ever look at the actual question pool numbers, like the pass rate for extra vs general is not that different apparently. a guy in my local group said he passed it mostly through hamstudy practice without fully understanding all of it and then went back and learned the why later. not saying thats the right approach but it worked for him
