So I finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend at a state forest near me, KFF-something i forget the exact number, and honestly it went way better than i expected. Set up the end fed on a 31ft fiberglass pole, ran about 25w from the 705 and managed to get like 38 contacts in a couple hours which i know isnt huge but for a first time out i was pretty happy with it.

My question is about logging and uploading. I used HAMRS on my phone which worked fine but im not 100% sure how the ADIF upload to the WWFF database actually works. Do i go through WWFF directly or through another portal? I saw something about ADIF2SOTA or whatever that converter tool is but wasnt sure if thats relevant here.

Also wondering how people handle spotting themselves. I didnt have great cell service out there so i couldnt self spot on the WWFF spotter page and i think that hurt my rate a lot toward the end. Is there a way to use like aprs or sms spotting or do most people just have a friend spot them remotely? Would love to hear how others handle this, especially in areas with marginal cell coverage.

congrats on the first one, 38 contacts is actually a solid start especially if you werent self spotting much. for the log upload you want to go to wwff.cc and upload the ADIF directly there, its under the activator section once youre logged in. pretty straightforward once you find it. the ADIF2SOTA thing is for Summits on the Air so yeah not relevant here unless you were on a summit too haha.

for spotting with bad cell service, a lot of activators use a simplex sked with a buddy ahead of time. basically you tell someone your plan, they watch the wwff spotter and when you check in with them on 2m or via text if you have even partial signal they put the spot up for you. some guys use the Garmin inreach for exactly this, you can send a preset message to a friend who spots you. its a bit of extra coordination but once you have a system worked out it really does help the pileup find you faster.

I did my first WWFF earlier this year too and had the same confusion about the logging. One thing i noticed is that the wwff database can take a little while to show your activation as valid, like dont panic if it doesnt show up immediately after you upload. Also make sure your ADIF has the correct reference number in the right field, i think i had to manually add it in hamrs because it wasnt automatically populating or something like that, been a while so i dont remember exactly.
