so i got my technician about three months ago and ive been mostly just listening on the local 2m repeater. theres a weekly net on tuesday nights and i finally worked up the nerve to check in last week. the net control called for check-ins and i just said my callsign and it seemed fine but then partway through the net he asked if anyone had traffic and i had no idea what that meant so i just stayed quiet.

i guess my question is, is there like an unwritten rulebook for how nets work? i dont want to say something dumb or step on someone. also what does it mean when someone says theyre "just monitoring" — do they check in and then say that or do they not check in at all? i feel like i missed something in my studying that covers this stuff in a more practical way.

ha, welcome to the tuesday night awkwardness club, i went through the exact same thing when i first started checking into our county net. "traffic" just means formal messages — like if you had a radiogram to pass along to someone. most of the time nobody has any and the net control just moves on, so staying quiet was actually the right call.

the "just monitoring" thing is a bit net-specific honestly. on our net people will check in and say "no traffic, just monitoring" which means they're listening but dont need to have a QSO or anything. some nets the net control will ask for monitors separately at the end. best thing you can do is just keep checking in, after a few weeks you'll start to pick up the rhythm of how that particular net runs. every net has its own little quirks depending on who's been running it for the past 20 years.

yeah dont stress about it too much. i messed up way worse my first time — accidentally keyed up right when net control was talking and had no idea what happened. someone came back and said "you've got a doubling situation" and i was completely lost. took me a minute to figure out i had stepped on the frequency. nobody was mean about it though, the guys on our local net are pretty patient with newer hams. just keep showing up and you'll get it.
