anyone else do the wednesday night nets? trying to figure out check-in times

 Loading...

so ive been licensed about 8 months now and finally feel comfortable enough to start checking into nets regularly instead of just listening. been monitoring a few different ones but im a little confused about the timing and how formal the check-in process actually is for most of them.

like last week i tried to check into what i think was a traffic net on 80m and i guess i jumped in at the wrong time or something because the net control just kind of moved on and i dont think my call even got logged. wasnt sure if i should try again or just wait. ended up just listening the rest of the night.

also saw something about a special event station coming up for some kind of anniversary, W1AW i think or maybe a different one, and it said you could get a certificate for making contact. is that something you just do like a normal QSO or is there a whole process to it? i looked on their website but couldnt find anything super clear about how to actually submit for the certificate after the fact.

oh man traffic nets can be a little intimidating at first because the pacing is different from a roundtable or a ragchew net. net control is usually moving fast through the check-in window and if your signal isnt punching through or the timing is off it's easy to get skipped. best thing is just to try again after a few callsigns, most NCS operators will circle back or open another check-in window at the end. dont sweat it, happens to everyone starting out.

for the special event certificate thing it totally depends on the specific operation. some of them you just log the contact yourself and submit an ADIF or a paper log through their website, others require a QSL card exchange. ARRL special event stations usually have a page on their site with the specific instructions and sometimes a direct email for the trustee running the operation. the W1AW portable operations during Centennial a few years back had a whole dedicated submission portal so it kinda varies. id say just google the callsign plus certificate and you'll usually find what you need pretty quick.

yeah what he said about traffic nets. also worth checking if your local club runs a more casual net first, those are way more forgiving while you get the hang of how check-ins actually work. i did like three months of just the local 2m net on monday nights before i felt ready to try anything on HF and it helped a lot just learning the rhythm of it.
