Is ham radio really dying or just changing?

Saw another article claiming amateur radio is a "dying hobby" because of aging demographics. But then I look at FT8 activity, POTA activations, and YouTube channels like Ham Radio 2.0 bringing in younger folks. While ham radio has historically attracted older demographics, that's changing rapidly. The hobby appeals to tech-savvy millennials and Gen Z who appreciate its DIY ethos and emergency communication value. Online communities, YouTube channels, and podcast hosts are bringing more young people into the hobby every day. Maybe we're not dying, just evolving?

Every generation thinks the hobby is dying! When I got my license in the 70s, the old timers were complaining about repeaters killing simplex operation. Change is constant in this hobby.

I'm 23 and got into ham radio through POTA videos on YouTube. Most of my friends think it's pretty cool, especially the emergency communications aspect. We're out here, just maybe not hanging out on 75m phone!

The data supports both views honestly. Another big trend is more women getting into ham radio. It used to be mostly men, but now, more women are getting involved. They bring new ideas, views, and creativity. This helps the hobby grow and develop. We're definitely seeing more diversity even if overall numbers fluctuate.
